EoNeo teaches a language by holding a spoken conversation with you. To do that it needs your microphone, and it keeps short notes about you so the next conversation can pick up where the last one left off.
We do not sell your data, we do not show you ads, and there are no third-party analytics or tracking scripts in this app.
Who we are
EoNeo is operated by Stephen Wong. You can reach us at support@spaikz.com with any question about this policy or about your data.
What we collect
- Your account basics. When you sign in with Google we receive your name, email address, profile picture URL, and a Google account identifier. We ask for nothing beyond that — no access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts, or calendar. Signing in with Apple on iOS gives us the same basics, and if you use Hide My Email we receive Apple's relay address rather than your real one — which is fine by us; we only ever use it to recognise your account.
- What you say, as text. Your speech is transcribed to text and the text is sent to our server so your friend can reply. We do not store or upload recordings of your voice.
- Conversation notes. After a conversation, your friend writes a short set of notes — for example your first name, your interests, what you find difficult in the language you are learning, and a topic to follow up on. These notes are deliberately capped in size.
- Conversation transcripts. The text of your conversations is saved to your account so your progress is not lost between devices.
- How you get on with each friend. Two numbers per person — roughly how much history you have with them, and how warmly the last few conversations went — so a friend you have spoken to thirty times does not greet you like a stranger. They are stored with that friend's notes and go when you delete them.
- Your settings and simple counts. Who you last spoke to, your theme, display options, whether you have allowed a close friendship to become romantic, how long a pause should end your turn, how fast your friend speaks, and how many turns and corrections you have had.
We do not collect payment information, we do not ask for your date of birth or address, and we do not build advertising profiles.
How your speech is processed
Speech recognition is performed by your web browser using the Web Speech API. This is important to understand: in Chrome and Edge, that API sends audio from your microphone to Google's speech recognition service to be transcribed. That happens between your browser and Google, under Google's Privacy Policy — the audio does not pass through our server, and we never receive or keep it. We receive only the resulting text.
The transcribed text is then sent to our server and on to Google's Vertex AI (the Gemini model family) to generate your friend's reply. Google processes this as our service provider and, under the Google Cloud terms that apply to our project, does not use it to train its models.
Your friend's replies are spoken aloud in one of two ways. On the live site, the text of the reply is sent to Microsoft Azure AI Speech, which returns audio for your browser to play. Only your friend's own words are sent — never your speech, your notes, or your account details. Microsoft processes that text as our service provider, under the Microsoft Privacy Statement.
If that request fails for any reason — you are offline, the service is unavailable, or cloud speech is switched off — your browser's own built-in speech synthesis reads the same text instead, and nothing leaves your device. Spoken replies are therefore never blocked by a network problem, and the app remains usable with no connection at all.
Where your data is stored
Your profile, notes, and transcripts are stored in Google Cloud Firestore in
the United States (us-central1), under your account only. Our
server runs on Google Cloud Run in the same region. Access rules are
configured so that your account's data can be read and written only by you
while signed in.
If you use EoNeo without signing in, your settings are kept in your browser's local storage on that device and are not sent to us.
How long we keep it
Notes and transcripts are kept until you delete them, because their whole purpose is continuity between sessions. Server logs, which record that a request happened and how large it was rather than what was said, are retained for up to 30 days.
Your choices
- Make them forget you. The "Forget what we've talked about" button on the start screen erases every note your friend keeps — your name, your interests, and every follow-up thread. Saved transcripts are not removed by this button.
- Delete your account and everything in it. Email support@spaikz.com and we will delete your profile, notes, and transcripts. We aim to do this within 30 days.
- Revoke our access to your Google account. Visit your Google account connections and remove EoNeo at any time.
- Refuse the microphone. The app asks before using it, and your browser lets you withdraw that permission whenever you like. Without it, the spoken conversation will not work.
Depending on where you live you may also have rights to access, correct, export, or restrict the processing of your data. Write to us and we will honour them.
Cookies and similar technology
We use no advertising or analytics cookies. Firebase Authentication stores a sign-in token in your browser so you are not asked to sign in on every visit, and your settings are cached locally so the app works when offline. That is the extent of it.
Children
EoNeo is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has signed up, contact us and we will remove the account.
Changes to this policy
If we change how data is handled in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, tell you in the app before it takes effect.
